However, with the inception of regulating bodies such as Construction Skills Certification Scheme and Construction Industry Training Board, there has been a considerable drop in the annual number of construction site accidents. This has led to employers to demand that their employees have CSCS Cards which is a sign of their competence and ability to work safely on a site. A Blue CSCS Card is one such CSCS Card which is required by most major organizations if you are an experienced worker, adept in his craft.
CSCS Blue Skilled Card
A Blue CSCS Card is a CSCS Card is available to individuals who are both skilled in their work and have some experience working in the field. You can get this card if you have completed a construction related qualification or undertaken an apprenticeship programme which is approved by CSCS.
Validity
This is a permanent card that comes with a validity period of 5 years. Once this period gets over, you can apply for renewal of the card as well. However, you must keep in mind to apply for renewal from 6 months before to 6 months after the expiry date of the card. If you fail to do so, you will have to go through the process of applying for your Skilled CSCS Card again.
Qualification Requirements
There are certain eligibility criteria that you need to fulfil before you can apply for a Blue CSCS Card.
CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
Just as is the case with any other CSCS Card, you have to pass your CITB Test before applying for Blue Card too. Also, make sure you pass it in the last two years itself or it won’s be acceptable.
CITB Health, Safety and Environment Course
Just like CITB Test, this course is a standard requirement of all CSCS Cards.
NVQ or SVQ Level 2 Training
This is another important qualification that you need to have in order to be eligible for applying for a Skilled CSCS Card.
Other qualifications
An alternative to NVQ Level 2 training is an apprenticeship programme that needs to be sponsored by your employer, a CSCS recognized Trailblazer or a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate. If you are opting either of these, you will have to provide a clear proof of your acquiring such a qualification to be able to apply for your CSCS Blue Card. This proof must display your name, the name of the acquired qualification and the date on which this qualification was awarded to you.
What is Blue CSCS Card for Skilled Craft Unit
The Blue CSCS Card for Craft Unit Level is reserved for occupation in which full NVQ or SVQ training courses do not exist, rather you must pass a trade specific unit in its lieu. That said, a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test and a CITB Health and Safety Course is required for obtaining this CSCS Card too.
Just like the Blue CSCS Card, this card also stays valid for 5 years and can be renewed thereafter. However, if you do not have any above-mentioned qualification but hold experience of working in your respective field, then you may apply for a Red Experienced Worker Card instead, while you may work towards obtaining the qualification.
